Coding and associated work efforts are largely individual. You sit (or stand) at your computer and work alone. But in reality you are working in a group. The standup reinforces the team nature of the overall effort. Humans are naturally social, but the computer engineering work effort is done largely individually. Something is necessary to maintain the social element and that's where standups come in. Other meeting patterns could work, but one at the beginning of the work day where everyone "checks in" seems to work well from the standpoint of managers whose job it is to corral independent workers of different strengths. If your team doesn't need a standup that's great, but if the team starts to need one you will wish you had been doing it all along before the balance got out of whack.
