String theory was supposed to simplify everything by replacing all the vertex factors with the free space propagator for a string. But then it turned out that string theory wasn't that simple and actually made things even more complicated...

I think that's something any software engineer can relate to.

(please correct if my summary of string theory is incorrect, I only have a vague understanding of it)
