(I do however, find dozens of various gmail related crapware.) Edit: tried the link above and still get the same error (and I've never installed it before, so this should be a fresh install).

I had the same problem. I found it by searching for this string exactly: "Gmail email from Google"

The built-in updates notification item didn't work, but searching your phrase, finding the item, and then trying "Update" did work.
