This seems like attributing to malice what could be attributed to incompetence.
It seems more plausible after reading the ProPublica article that they were swinging hammers in the dark trying to find evidence of “fraud” or other political point scoring grifts. Combined with reckless incompetence.
I’m skeptical that the simplest explanation is that they stole it for xAI or Russia, I think that requires proof.
