What people are making fun of is that people responsible for it were trying to deny it's (export-import)/import, but the chosen parameters cancel out completely. So... it's exactly that. And this covers only goods, ignoring services, which skews the numbers quite a lot.

Some of the hardest hit places, too, are places that could never make up the trade deficit.

                              Deficit Tariff
Saint Pierre and Miquelon 99 50
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Pierre_and_Miquelon - an archipelago with less than 6,000 people. I can't even find how much they actually export to the US, but their exports aren't that significant. By the math used by Trump & co, if they export $1 million in goods to the US and only import $10k from the US, this is the result.

The 0.25*4 multiplication factor is a real masterpiece. I guess they let a slightly high intern yolo this?

Or a magic robot; it feels like the sort of completely pointless thing that LLMs like to put in.
