Greek Language Question (wikipedia.org)

It’s remarkable that educated people invented the idea that there was a true Greek to go back to, when in ancient times it had been an evolving and fragmented language. Athenians and Spartans didn’t speak the same Greek, nor did Homer and Alexander. But this was the nineteenth century, and national myth making was the order of the day. Instead of asking “how shall we live together?” the question was “how shall we define ourselves apart?”
