Why I Work on Ads at Google (jefftk.com)

(2021)

Three years later I'm not in ads anymore, and now work at a research non-profit trying to detect new viruses in wastewater sequencing data. I found a direct use of my efforts that was more valuable than earning to give, so I switched.

Looking back, I think the key point of the post is still right: I still see the web as being pulled between ad-supported and paywalled, and I'm still rooting for the former.

> Ads. You pay with your attention.

No. You pay by being tagged, tracked, and commoditized like an animal. The goal of internet advertising platforms is to make your personal private business, their business. It's ugly stuff.

Surveillance capitalism isn't human.
