I offer consulting, rather than fingers-on-keys building-a-system.
For clients with existing systems, typically I explain how Redshift works, why they're having problems, and that it's the wrong database for their use cases.
For greenfield clients, typically I explain how Redshift works, why they would have problems, and that it's the wrong database for their use cases.
Almost all clients end up planning to change database; Redshift is not a general purpose database, scales when and only when correctly operated, and correct operation is demanding in many ways.
However, for the use case it does have, which is timely SQL on Big Data, there are no other options; you have to be relational to get SQL, and you must sort to be timely, and sorting has profound implications throughout the data design, ETL system and user base.
In all cases, explaining the necessary information almost always takes two or three hours all told, and that's the job done, but it took five years of specializing in Redshift to learn enough to do that, so I have to charge a reasonable amount, 500 USD flat rate, but there's an honour system : you pay only if you think you got your money's worth.
My apologies. To me, "work" means a permanent, full-time job, and freelance is pretty much everything else, so you can understand how I interpreted the instructions.
Whether you need a complex enterprise system or a simple web application, I'd be happy to help.
I'd love to learn more about your project and how I can be of service.

SEEKING WORK | REMOTE WORLDWIDE | Based in the UK & France
I design & build anti-fragile, reliable sysadmin / SRE/ DevOps stuff; anything from Python monitoring scripts to cloud-based infrastructure design and implementations.
I usually work with customers who have urgent operational needs that require an immediate short-term engagement.
My expertise is based on 30 years of hands-on technical experience in all areas of IT, but particularly in architecting, building and managing data-driven enterprise platforms.
Recent examples of my work:
- Organisational-level DevOps tooling and security implementations
- Global Azure infrastructure deployment, management and security (Terraform, DevOps, KMS, AppGw)
- Python-based SRE scripting for monitoring custom federated clusters using Consul, Vault, Nomad
- Productionalising Kafka and Confluent clusters (SSL, SASL, ACLs, Debezium)
- Tracking down performance bottlenecks in Elasticsearch and Solr
- Stabilisation of complex Java-based containerised applications
- Validation of greenfield project designs
- Single-pane-of-glass dashboard design in Datadog, Splunk and Azure
- Deploying a global, multi-cloud, Kubernetes-based PaaS (AWS and Azure)
I am a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), Google Style, with experience at both large and small organizations. I've been using Kubernetes since the very beginning, been actively working at scale, and worked across the stack and with diverse technologies. I'm looking to help small dev teams increase their velocity by implementing best-practices of Devops: CI/CD, Kubernetes Deployments, and effective Monitoring frameworks. My current availability is limited; I'm well stocked on clients though trying to increase throughput and wrap up some projects. I'm available for consulting on your initial setup, for fixing your build, as well as on retainer for operational Oncall. I'm actually quite busy at the moment, but happy to have a conversation if you've got something small or forward-looking, or happy to forward it on to my network.
I have a PhD in optimization / operations research. I'm the father of four young children, so I'm looking for flexible/remote part-time work, and/or contract work. I can work up to around 20-30 hours per week.
My specializations revolve around optimization and operations research---essentially, I solve optimization problems. You can give me a real-world problem and I can translate it into a mathematical model that can be solved (often optimally) via integer programming, constraint programming, or various forms of metaheuristics. I could manage my way around new solvers and programming languages if the project required it.
I'm currently working on a column generation-based daily fantasy sports (DFS) solver as a personal project. Taking as input the predictions/requirements of the user, this solver can generate optimal lineups for multi-entry tourneys. It is, as far as I am aware, the only DFS solver that can generate provably optimal sets of lineups for multi-entry DFS tourneys.

Hi, I am Daniel Vainsencher, ML PhD and practitioner. You want to use AI to solve a business or technical problem, have data and a team, but no senior research staff.
I can, on a consulting/contracting basis:
1. Translate your problem and context into well defined prediction and decision problems, connecting performance to the bottom line.
2. Plan out, chunk, and help implement solutions to prediction and decision problems via existing (and if needed, new) ML and optimization software.
3. Support your engineer/research staff in applying ML and connecting it to business goals, via ideas, coaching and troubleshooting.
Have years of experience building software systems, leading dev teams, developing algorithms, publishing state of the art ML/optimization research, and applying them to challenging problems. I've worked/done applied research in domains of entertainment, algorithmic trading, video processing, face recognition, signal processing, demand forecasting and more.
Willing to relocate: yes, to any location in Africa, where i can get the necessary permission to live and work.
Technologies: Linux, Fullstack, System Administration.
Résumé/CV: on request (software development, CTO, mentoring, training, fluent in English and German)
Like a recent Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31518945], I am looking for similar work. I am a European software developer who has lived and worked on four continents. Now it's time to move on and so i am looking to relocate to Africa.
While i could find a job elsewhere i believe that the experience living in an area where my work is going to have an impact gives me a better understanding of the needs of the location i am serving. Whether it is through direct contact with clients and users or just by being part of a local community and learning about the reality of living there.
I have more than a decade of experience running a company, doing software development, support and training and mentoring adults and students, as well as working on educational projects, and i am willing to take on a mixture of roles as needed to support a project.

Hi, my name is Till.
I always like to help people, so if you need help with anything, let me know! :)
I usually work remotely, but I'm open to traveling to visit you. I can help get things running, especially when you're a young startup or launching a new project.
For example, maybe you have written a web app and need it deployed to the cloud. Or maybe you want to scale your product to meet the demand. Or maybe you want to launch your app in a new market, requiring a translation system and a new cloud deployment strategy. I can help make these things possible!
I most often write back-end services or cloud deployments.

Expert in scaling, building production and development infrastructure from scratch, datacenter migrations, CI/CD process and pipelines, migration to (and from!) cloud. I'm a software architect and developer grown into the Ops role, I know how the software works at scale.

The ideal engagement at this point would be with a firm that expects to need team-level help and wants to try me out as the lead for that on a smaller initial project.
You will like working with me because I:
* hold your goals as my priorities
* communicate verbosely yet synthesize well
* my rates are reasonable in exchange for the value I deliver
* I guarantee I will get the job done
Concrete examples:
* built realtime stats and the enterprise-wide developer portal for one of the top 3 major US sports leagues (golang/pyspark/docker/azure)
* portfolio management process replatforming for a midsize hedge fund (bespoke->dockerized python aws lambda architecture)
* built a ~50 node, Dockerized, Terraform-deployed distributed system to provide realtime, transformed trade data from crypto exchanges to a Kafka pipeline and data lake (fodder for an analytics platform). Met 5000msec SLA across arbitrarily many exchanges and ticker symbols. Blue-green deployment for complete CICD safety. Cloudwatch metrics proved SLA was met and provided general system oversight.
* built a framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.
* built and managed a team of 8 engineers operating against multiple streams of work to meet business needs, with ~12 active projects at a time.

Well, some time ago, I applied, there were some coding(?) interviews, but everything dropped when I read the contract. There were clauses that were highly unfavourable for me (give up right to court, high penalties for infringement). The infringement conditions were too generous for my taste and not negotiable.
Great marketing stunt Toptal team.
Here is response I got.
Thank you for your time and effort in applying to Toptal.

I'm David, a programmer with over 20 years' experience. Most of my career has been back-end focused, and that's where I'm at my best, but I can solve problems across a full stack.
I like to solve problems with code. Most recently I've been working in Python and Rust, but over the years I've also done tons of work in C, Perl, Clojure, Go, Ruby and more.
I particularly enjoy the challenge of working with legacy systems; if you need someone on hand to troubleshoot and maintain (or even migrate away from!) an abandoned-but-still-important system, maybe I can help.

I am an experienced engineer with a career spanning over a decade, working on a wide variety of commercial and open source projects in different industries.
In the past few years I have worked on real-time drone control and low latency video streaming, embedded linux OS deployment and maintenance, cross-platform mobile and desktop development, and I designed and implemented an encrypted cloud storage system for a company in Europe using the Rust language.
For several years I was the lead developer and maintainer of the OpenHD project[1] where I reorganized and modernized the development and release process, and created a cross platform touchscreen drone controller called QOpenHD[2].
I have real world experience with embedded Linux, Mac, and Windows systems programming (primarily C, C++, and Rust), iOS/iPhone and macOS development (Obj-C, Obj-C++, Swift, Rust FFI), and Windows desktop development (C# .NET/WPF, Rust FFI).
I have also used the Qt framework for several years and have in-depth knowledge of lower level platform-specific rendering and video handling APIs (OpenGL, Linux v4l2/dmabuf, GL texture/buffer sharing).
For personal projects I have designed my own FPGA IP cores, experience which gives me a much better understanding of how the hardware we run our software on actually works in practice.
Currently I am working on an animal safety monitoring system (embedded linux, Qt framework, C++ and Rust languages) designed to detect hazardous conditions and events that could be life threatening for a particular species (such as a baby tortoise flipping over directly under a heat lamp), using a combination of habitat sensors, thermal imaging, and computer vision. It integrates with common commercial streaming and notification systems such as the YouTube Live streaming platform, Twilio SMS notifications, and Apple HomeKit.

I help startups with the UX/UI and web design of their products. This includes web apps, websites, landing pages, screenshots and copywriting, and I can assist with frontend development where needed. My background as a startup founder and full stack developer helps me create practical design solutions that balance usability, aesthetics, development effort and performance. I work to fixed price quotes when projects are self-contained.
---
The best live example of my work is Checkbot (https://www.checkbot.io/), a browser extension that tests websites for SEO, speed and performance problems. The entire project is my own work including coding the extension itself, UX/UI design, website design (the homepage is optimised to load in 0.7 seconds, 0.3MB data transferred), website copy, and website articles on web best practices.

can i just step in for a second and point out its 30 replies here and just a single seeking freelancer comment. I have never seen this on HN as far as i can remember. Its also the feeling i get from my usual freelancer newsletters and linkedin offers, i have rarely seen the market so empty, not even at the beginning of the coronavirus lockdowns.
As a freelancer who has had multiple contacts (and occasionally work) from HN monthly posts, I can say it is not that rare. The people looking for freelancers rarely post, they do apparently look over it to find people to contact, though.
Hm but you are saying the same as me, that "The people looking for freelancers rarely post". I never said they don't look at the freelancers who are looking, I haven't tried it myself so wouldn't know that. It's nice to know that happens though
And the single seeking freelancer is not exactly a job/project offer but rather a community to join, which is not a bad opportunity per se but probably not exactly what freelancers are looking for in this thread.
I thought the previous Freelancer threads had 1:10 or 1:20 ratios. It's not surprising to me, the freelancer market seems to be more network-oriented. Upwork etc being heavily skewed not in freelancers' favor.
Saw mixed feelings about upwork. There are ppl saying that is the place to be on freelancing, others (some "employers" complained about low qlty of work).
I am going to make an account there soon(TM).
A generalist, programming since ~2000 (professionally since 2008).
Some areas I can help with:
* math
* advanced algorithms
* interfacing with experts in other technical fields
* prototyping
* figuring out minimalist solutions
* performance optimization
* Rust, vanilla TypeScript, Python, C++
* DevEx

Hi. I'm Craig. I'm an experienced Senior Software Engineer, Systems Architect and Microsoft Certified Professional with a passion for software development.
I work primarily, but not exclusively, with Microsoft technologies and the .NET / .NET Core frameworks, leading complex and challenging enterprise software development projects to successfully deliver robust, secure, scalable and efficient software solutions, encompassing over 20 years of experience in the field.
I'm passionate about distributed systems design, CQRS and event sourcing and a proponent of domain-driven design to ensure that solutions are laser-focused on solving real business problems. I'm an open source enthusiast and advocate using the best and most appropriate tools available, providing for an effective and pragmatic solution that delivers genuine and quantifiable business value.
Throughout my career I've helped numerous businesses of varying sizes in varying industries get their technology investment right and I can do the same for you.
Recent projects include:
+ Successfully delivered large section of an ambitious project to re-engineer a number of monolithic applications to cloud-native, event-driven distributed services for a leading hospitality software provider as part of a company-wide effort to modernise entire software estate including training and mentoring staff on event-driven architecture and distributed system design.
+ Successfully designed & delivered large, global SaaS product to manage and automate music royalty collection and payment for one of the UK's largest and most demanding independent music publishers including full cloud geo-distribution & redundancy to ensure high availability & reliability for the worldwide client base.
+ Successfully lead project to develop industry leading anti-motor fraud web application and API with advanced OLAP & OLTP system and data warehouse including one of Europe's largest anti-fraud databases for a Top 40 UK law firm.
+ Successfully lead project to deliver a market-leading, best-of-breed corporate travel management web & desktop-based product suite for a company who, largely as a result of the technology, were later acquired in a multi-million pound deal.
I have a strong background in technology, with over two decades of experience in the field. Throughout my career, I have built a solid foundation of core technical skills and knowledge. I am confident in my ability to understand and work with a wide range of technologies.
My favourite types of projects are those that involve AWS cost optimization and housekeeping. I have a knack for discovering inefficiencies and finding ways to save my clients money, and I enjoy the satisfaction of streamlining and organizing systems. I believe that these types of "housekeeping" tasks are often overlooked, but they can have a huge impact on a company's bottom line. I take pride in being able to deliver great results for my clients and getting the most value for their investment.
I am an AWS, Python, and CI/CD specialist with a focus on cost optimization in AWS. I am seeking ad hoc work that involves creating summary reports on cost optimization in clients' AWS environments. If you are interested in discussing this further, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Amazon Redshift specialist.
Web-site : https://www.amazonredshiftresearchproject.org
Email is on the site.
