If you are worried about this, you can revoke the Instagram camera permission from Settings, and only turn it on when you actually want to use it. Settings -> Instagram -> "Allow Instagram to access" -> Camera The app will still work, it will just prompt you for the permission when going into the camera view.

This was my immediate suggestion to her, and she is happy with this solution.

We still want to know why this step was necessary. After all, this disables a useful feature for the sake of preventing… what exactly?
