Minerals, particularly rare earths, that are a huge strategic asset to China and their desire to dominate the world economy. It's also in a strategic place vis a vis India, and they can't tolerate even a degree of autonomy of such a large area adjacent to their rival in Asia. But the real threat is a national and religious identity separate from China.
