Ask HN: Is there a market for cheap/non-datacenter hosting?

Over the last few months I've noticed an increasing number of posts asking for recommendations on VPS/dedicated server hosting. I got the impression that at least some of these people were looking for cheap boxes for hacking and wouldn't care too much if the cheap systems weren't backed by multiple redundant generators, UPS, and multiple backbone peering.

My idea: buy/rent an old self-storage building in a suburb, run a bundle of fiber to it, and sell space.

Any critiques or better ideas?

cheap boxes for hacking

You would have to make it cheaper than Rackspace Cloud or Amazon EC2. Rackspace has 256MB instances for $11/mo, and rackspace, 1GB instances for $60/mo. You'd get root access on a server in a top notch datacenter. I doubt you could do it for that price.
