I chose a Braun clock, since the LCD backlight can be switched off, leaving it nice and dim, and the projection onto the ceiling is can be set to a dim red.

I'm not sure it's a feature, since the apartment is rented and I'll probably need to pay for the repair, but I dropped it on the floor, and it has left a fairly obvious dent.
